USArtists “Extraordinary Art: Beyond the Museum II”
The Survivors Art Foundation participated in the October USArtists exhibition, “Extraordinary At: Beyond the Museum II.” This exhibition was part of the USArtists Special Needs program.
USArtists: “The Special Needs program was founded in 1992 as an integral part of USArtists. The intent of its founder, Jane Fortune, was to make museum quality art accessible to people with disabilities. Since 1992, the Special Needs program has offered interactive artmaking workshops as well as docent led tours of USArtists to individuals with disabilities and special needs.
“In 1998, the Program significantly expanded its mission and activities to include a national juried exhibition and a discussion program focusing on the relationship between creativity and living with a disability. USArtists has also provided tickets to various organizations serving people with disabilities in order to increase the level of accessibility of USArtists.
“We welcome you to the second annual juried exhibition, “Extraordinary At: Beyond the Museum II.” This year’s show features the outstanding work of over 70 artists nationwide who live with a range of disabilities, and a special installation by noted Philadelphia artist Isaiah Zaga. We are grateful to Jane Fortune, and to the organizations and individuals who have helped us make this unique and valuable program possible.”
The exhibition featured ten hand-painted silk panels from the Survivors Art Foundation Kosovo Refugees Outreach Project, and took place October 22-24, 1999, at the 33rd Street Armory in Philadelphia, PA. View the panels closeup online, or click below to view excerpts from the USArtists show.
