African Dance Group “Spontaneous Combustion”

“Spontaneous Combustion” performed two traditional dances from West Africa:

“Fanga” is a traditional welcome dance, the chant “fanga ala fia ashe ashe” translates as: “We welcome you with peace so be it.” The dance is an ancient greeting dance last performed at a welcome ceremony in 1875. The dance movements mean, “We welcome you with our words, we welcome you from our hearts. We welcome you with no weapons in our hands or behind our backs. We welcome you from the North, South, East and West.”

“Freokoba” is a courtship dance. Traditionally a friendly competition between the drummers and male and female dancers.
